I was ready to start scripting Continuum Universe The New Age. The stage was set with my cast of primary characters, the main storyline was mapped out, I had a list of essential flashbacks to span the three-year gap, and I knew which subplots I was going to bring in from previous stories. I also knew exactly where I wanted to start writing. The first chapter I scripted was the epilogue.
A story this long, with this many characters and plot lines, was new to me. I might have known the story and the major moments within I needed to hit, but I still had to get from point A to point Z. It felt daunting, so I decided I wanted to start at the end and give myself something to work towards. It was an odd pleasure to be able to write the end of the story before I had even begun.
When I finished the epilogue, I felt this was gonna be a piece of cake.
With all the free writing I had done, I knew the first 12 chapters were going to showcase all the major players, set up the state of Earth and Farsun three years in the future, introduce subplots, and start the main story. So I started writing and could not stop. The characters came back to me immediately, and developing new relationships between them was a blast. I was having so much fun I had forgotten that I would need an artist.
So, after writing 12 chapters, it was time to find someone who could bring this to life.
I won’t bore you with the details of how I go about looking for an artist or how they are chosen, but after my usual vetting process, I found Aldin Viray. I could not have been more lucky. He read the previous material before he started layouts to become familiar with the characters and settings. He did redesigns and pin-ups. His enthusiasm for the characters and stories was evident, and you could tell he was genuinely excited to be bringing this new chapter to the page.
He started layouts, and I went back to writing.
Now, here we are with 16 chapters written, more plotted, six chapters available on Substack, and more already penciled. It has been quite a journey getting to this point, but Aldin and I are on a roll, and we won’t stop till we reach that epilogue.
